O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement for her performance. O'Neil was given high praise by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were awed by her performance, and advised viewers to choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performances. Following two stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
